Quick Start Guide

Get from zero to inspecting your first EDI file in under 5 minutes.

Step 1: Open EDI Paisan

Go to app.edipaisan.com in your web browser.

No download required — EDI Paisan runs entirely in your browser. Works on Chrome, Firefox, Safari, and Edge.

Step 2: Upload Your File

Drag and drop any EDI file onto the upload area, or click to browse your files.

Supported formats:

  • .edi, .txt, .x12 — Standard EDI file extensions
  • Any text file containing EDI data

File size: Up to 100MB per file

💡 Your file stays private. EDI Paisan processes everything locally in your browser. Your file is never uploaded to our servers.

Step 3: Explore the File

Once uploaded, you'll see your EDI file broken down into a navigable structure:

Tree View

The default view shows your file as a collapsible tree:

  • Interchange (ISA/IEA) — The outer envelope
    • Functional Group (GS/GE) — Groups of related transactions
      • Transaction Set (ST/SE) — Individual transactions (claims, remittances, etc.)
        • Segments — The actual data (CLM, NM1, SVC, etc.)

Click any node to expand it and see what's inside.

Raw View

Switch to Raw View to see segments in their original order, with byte offsets and delimiter highlighting. Useful for troubleshooting parsing issues or comparing with other tools.

Step 4: Find What You're Looking For

Use the Search bar to jump directly to specific data:

  • Search by segment — Type CLM to find all claim segments
  • Search by value — Type a patient name or claim ID
  • Search by element — Type NM1*IL to find specific qualifier patterns

Click any search result to jump to that location in the file.

Step 5: Understand Segment Details

Click on any segment to see its contents broken down by element:

NM1*IL*1*SMITH*JOHN****MI*12345678901~

Becomes:

PositionElementDescription
NM101ILEntity Identifier Code: Insured
NM1021Entity Type: Person
NM103SMITHLast Name
NM104JOHNFirst Name
NM108MIID Code Qualifier: Member ID
NM10912345678901Member ID

EDI Paisan uses the official X12 implementation guides to label each element with its meaning.
